WEST CHATSWORTH, Los Angeles County — The former Chatsworth Reservoir played a central role in the development of the western San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities.
According to a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power history, the reservoir entered service in 1919 as a water storage facility during the area’s agricultural period. Its two earthen dams were built using an early hydraulic-fill method. The initial reported storage capacity was 7,400 acre-feet, with later improvements expanding the reservoir in the early 1930s.
From irrigation to city growth
At first, stored water principally supported agricultural irrigation. As housing expanded between the 1950s and late 1960s, reservoir operations increasingly supported residential and emergency water demands. County cultural-history materials note that the reservoir and its oak-lined landscape also appeared in Western film production.
These are historical facts, not a claim that the former reservoir currently supplies drinking water or that its property is open for public swimming or boating. The site has a separate modern land-management and environmental history. Before visiting, residents should check the present agency’s access rules.
